Handmade Hats for Baby

At St. Luke’s Birthing Center, we know it’s those little things that make all the difference. The kind care you receive during labor and delivery, the ability to dim the lights to your preferred brightness, the deep tubs that make labor a little more comfortable. It’s these details that make your birth experience memorable.

If you haven’t delivered at St. Luke’s, you might not know about one of our favorite touches: hand knit baby hats. These hats, made in various colors, details and sizes, are generously knit by St. Luke’s volunteers, such as Toni Landgren. Her hope is for new babies to go home wearing their own special, hand knit hat.

“I look at those little hats and imagine them on little babies as they’re getting acquainted with the world,” Landgren said. “I think they’re so sweet.”  The hats are on display in the Birthing Center’s lobby, so parents can select one that’s just right for their baby.

Landgren volunteers in St. Luke’s Surgical & Procedural Care every Tuesday, and has been part of the St. Luke’s family for a large part of her career. She first started knitting hats for St. Luke’s babies after seeing another volunteer drop off a bag of them. While she claims she’s not an expert knitter, her hats are beautiful. Landgren said she enjoys staying busy and doing something for others.

“I’ve been in the medical field most of my life and thought I’d like to give something back,” Landgren said. “If I can do something nice, that’s important to me.”

It started with Landgren finding a preemie hat pattern online, and has blossomed into a point of pride. Landgren explained that she can’t stay away from the yarn department and loves to show off the finished hats.
