Calming Relief: Labor Tubs at St. Luke’s

By Michelle Breiland, PA-C St. Luke's Obstetrics & Gynecology Associates

The deep labor tubs are one of the most loved features in our new Birthing Center. Not only do they add a spa-like feel to each suite, but they also provide a calming relief for laboring moms. At St. Luke’s, we’re always looking for ways to make your birth experience better. Incorporating labor tubs is just one way we do that, along with other low intervention options.

Ease Pain & Pressure

Our labor tubs are deep so that water can cover mom’s belly. This soothing environment helps to ease pain and pressure during labor. Being surrounded by warm water and soft lights can also help mom feel more in control and comfortable. It is a great low-intervention resource for pain management. Your birthing team will be by your side to help you in and out of the tub, and with every step of the process. Moms may remain in the tub until they start to approach delivery, or as long as their doctor advises. These tubs are not used for delivery.

What to Know

Because labor tubs can provide such calming relief, there’s no reason not to try. While I would recommend using the labor tub to anyone, there are a few factors to consider. You can not use the labor tub once you have received an epidural. Using a labor tub may not be recommended if mom has a fever or an infection, needs to be monitored more closely or if something out of the ordinary comes up.

If you’re interested in using a labor tub, you can add it to your Birth Plan or make your request known when you arrive at the Birthing Center. We do everything we can to give moms the kind of birth experience they prefer.
