Kid-Friendly Features

By Lindsay Ekstrom, RN St. Luke’s Birthing Center

Welcoming Older Siblings to the Birthing Center

When you have kids, you know how important it is to keep little ones entertained and comfortable wherever you go. Especially when a wait is involved. That’s why, at St. Luke’s, we made sure to include features for older siblings in our birthing center remodel. These are the things older siblings can enjoy when they first visit baby.

1. Family Room

Our Birthing Center’s family waiting room has tables and chairs for all sizes, along with toys for a range of ages. Even better, we have a basket filled with knit items handmade by wonderful volunteers that visiting children can give to baby when they first meet.

Birthing suites feature a mix of rocking chairs and couches so that families can spend time in the rooms, as well.

2. Bathroom

If you’ve ever lifted up a child to reach the soap, you’ll appreciate the kid-friendly bathroom with a smaller sink and toilet. It might seem like a small feature, but when a bathroom is decorated and designed for kids, kids notice. And, parents appreciate the ease.

3. Self-Serve Kitchenette

Another new feature of the birthing center is the self-service kitchenette. Visitors don’t have to leave the unit for snacks, treats or drinks. The kitchenette includes a vending machine, toaster and microwave for anyone to use.

4. Twinkle Twinkle Button

At St. Luke’s Birthing Center, there’s a special button near our nurses station that plays the song “Twinkle Twinkle Little Star” throughout the hospital every time a baby is born. When new babies have older siblings, we wait until the siblings arrive so they can press the button and make the announcement. It’s a fun way for kids to be part of the process.

St. Luke’s Birthing Center is located in Duluth, MN, with St. Luke’s clinics in the surrounding region, including Superior, WI. To schedule a tour of St. Luke’s Birthing Center, call 218.249.5605.
